Katty Xiomara’s spring collection offered a bounty of maritime references, as evidenced by the first few looks down the runway featuring netting, scalelike fabrics, cascading ruffles and sailor uniforms. But those pieces felt a little too literal, and unrealistic, for everyday wear.
Where Xiomara excelled was when she took her tidal theme and created something original: engineered prints with vibrant watercolor swirls in ocean hues and an abstract octopus on flirty dresses that had great movement. A sexy silver-sequin stunner took the idea of an enchanting mermaid instead of a mermaid-skirt silhouette; when a mermaid-skirt did come out, it had a Latin flare. Other highlights didn’t necessarily reference maritime, such as a shirtdress paired over trousers that riffed on men’s wear, laid-back pajama looks, and an embroidered netted dress with ruffle sleeves that had the most modern silhouette of the lineup.
